Is it a fair test?: an animal vision lesson
Pupils sort facts about animal eyes into measured and estimated, and discuss how scientists test eyes.
Hook
Ask: how could anyone know what a dinosaur saw?
Steps
- 5 minShow the photo through the dog, the jumping spider and T. rex.
- 10 minOpen each animal's science page. Pupils copy two numbers and note whether each is measured or estimated.
- 10 minGroups decide which picture they trust most and why. T. rex is a reconstruction from fossils.
- 10 minPupils plan a fair test of a pet's eyesight: what changes, what stays the same, what is measured.
- 5 minTalk: a simulation is a model built from measurements, not the animal's own experience.
The animals
The numbers behind them: Dog, Portia jumping spider.
Talk about it
What would make you more confident in a number about an animal's eyes?
A good answer
Measurements from more than one study, more animals tested, and the same answer from different methods.
Worksheet
Print the worksheet (A4 or US Letter, with an answer key on its own page).
