Day or night? Sort the animals

Is it busy by day or by night? A barn owl hunts in the dark; a pigeon is up with the sun. Sort eight animals into the day bin or the night bin, then check your answers. Every animal here has had its daily habits studied.

Drag each card into a bin, or press its Day or Night button.

      What does nocturnal mean?

Busy at night and resting by day. Many night animals have big eyes, and some have a mirror layer at the back of the eye that makes them shine in torchlight.

      What is a diurnal animal?

One that is busy by day and sleeps at night, like you. Many day animals rely on sharp eyes and good colour vision.

Where do the answers come from?

From published studies of each animal's daily habits. Only animals whose habits have been recorded appear in the game: 409 of them, 105 night animals and 304 day animals.
