Reptiles vision science: every measurement

The vision values of all 33 reptiles on this site, one row each, with the evidence level of every value and the studies behind it. Species with enough measured values also have their own science page.

Heat pits

Pit vipers, pythons and boas sense infrared heat with pit organs on the head. The pits are not part of the eye, so they are not one of the six dials. The heat sensor in the pits was identified by Gracheva EO et al. (2010), Molecular basis of infrared detection by snakes, Nature 464:1006 (Europe PMC record checked 2026-10-01), pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2855400.
